Why is it important to perform employee physicals?

There are multiple instances during which an employee physical may be needed. There are also a number of reasons for why it is can be considered necessary to obtain an employee physical.

The first instance for which employers should choose to perform physicals is pre-employment or post-offer. A post-offer physical is a great way to obtain objective information about a potential employee’s physical capabilities. Hiring the right-fit isn’t always an easy task but with a pre-placement physical, you can at least be assured that the individual is physically able to meet the demands of the position for which you are placing them. Knowing the individual is capable of performing the job will lower your chances of a future workplace injury and in turn, raise your productivity levels. Pre-employment physicals are also a great way to receive baseline data on a potential hire. This data will give you the information you need about the person’s pre-existing conditions as well as current levels of ability. Having baseline data can cover your company in the case of a workplace-related injury and/or an unwanted lawsuit.

The second reason employers need to perform employment physicals is for return-to-duty situations. If an employee has been out for any reason, it is necessary to test the employee upon their return to the workplace. This ensures that the individual is still capable of doing the job for which they were hired. If the employee was out for medical reasons, the tests are extremely vital as they will allow you to compare the baseline data to the current information.

The third situation for which employers should perform physicals is when an employee is switching jobs within the company. Every job is not the same and the physical demands of one job may outweigh the demands of another significantly. It is important that employees are tested each time they switch positions so as to make sure the demands of the new position are able to be met.
